Bayenthal and Marienburg: New bicycle streets for more safety!

In Cologne-Bayenthal and Marienburg, the coming weeks will be all about bicycles. On Tuesday, October 28th, an information event on the design of bicycle streets will take place in the Irmgardis-Gymnasium. The plans for the axis of Goethestrasse and Schillerstrasse will be presented, which are part of a comprehensive cycle connection between Schönhauser Strasse and the Military Ring. The aim of the new cycle streets is to promote cycling and thus increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, especially school students. Traffic planner Peter Gwiasda will explain the legal and scientific background to this Cologne City Gazette reported.

Bicycle streets are more than just a trend. Not only do they improve traffic flow for cyclists, but they also increase safety on the roads. A joint project by the University of Wuppertal and the German Institute for Urban Studies presents these advantages in a comprehensive guide. This research project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, aims to develop general recommendations for the design and establishment of bicycle streets. Like that German Institute for Urban Studies writes, cycle streets not only offer a high level of traffic safety, they also concentrate and accelerate cycle traffic.

Achievements and improvements in the city

Since September 2023, you have been able to use the advantages of bicycle streets on Maybachstrasse. Between Krefelder Straße and Am Kümpchenshof, this street is now designated as a bicycle street. Comprehensive measures have been taken here to promote cycling: bollards on Ritterstrasse prevent car traffic from passing through. In addition, large pictograms on the road ensure increased visibility. Signage also helps to increase comfort for cyclists. As the City of Cologne There is also a safety separation strip for parking to prevent accidents caused by “dooring”.

Special features such as the adapted traffic lights at the intersection of Maybachstraße/Krefelder Straße and the installation of new bicycle parking facilities show how seriously the city takes traffic safety. These points make Maybachstrasse a popular and well-frequented connection that should give a boost to cycling in Cologne.

Overall, it shows that the planning and implementation of bicycle streets in Cologne not only bring practical benefits, but are also a sign of a future-oriented transport policy. The upcoming information event will certainly attract many interested citizens who want to find out more about the benefits and use of bicycle lanes.
