Apple festival at Gut Leidenhausen: enjoyment for the whole family!

In the heart of Cologne Eil, the largest and at the same time most natural part of the city, the fruit arboretum at the Gut Leidenhausen environmental education center is flourishing. This tranquil area, which was originally a farm and was acquired by the city of Cologne in 1963, not only scores points with its green oasis, but also with a wide range of events. On September 21st the traditional event will take place here again Apple festival celebrated, a highlight in the annual calendar that promises to attract young and old.

Speaking of the apple festival: from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can expect a colorful mix of culinary delicacies such as freshly baked apple cake and apple waffles as well as an exhibition of old apple varieties. The history of fruit growing is also honored. Visitors can purchase old varieties of fruit trees and even bring their own apples and pears to the juicing event. For three large buckets of fruit (30 kg) you get five liters of freshly squeezed juice - an exchange that is really worth it!

A place to meet and learn

Gut Leidenhausen not only serves as a place to relax for athletes and dog walkers, but is also a center for environmental education. Here, families can enjoy the playground and the water corner, while the bird of prey sanctuary is a source of amazement on Sundays and public holidays. Especially that one orchards, which are viewed as communities of plants, animals and people, contribute to the promotion of biodiversity. The NABU city association is actively involved in preserving the diversity of these valuable habitats and drawing attention to the importance of care.

These beautiful meadows are not only home to numerous species, but also provide tasty fruit. It is therefore worth visiting the apple festival, which not only promises fun and enjoyment, but also the opportunity to learn interesting facts about the cultural landscape. Those interested can also take part flexibly at the estate by registering for large quantities of fruit juice - ideal for anyone who wants to arrive with slightly larger luggage.

Close community in the Eil district

Although Eil has no typical shopping streets or cafés, Gut Leidenhausen is a popular meeting place for the neighborhood. Being active here brings the community together, and the Eil local ring, under the leadership of Erwin Bäuml, is intensively dedicated to the history of the district. Another highlight is Besenbinderplatz with its monument to the Besenbinder, a work of art by Franz Metzmacher that keeps local history alive.

Hardly anywhere in Cologne does tradition and closeness to nature come together as beautifully as in Eil.
