Major manhunt in Cologne: Fugitive criminal wanted after escaping from the clinic!

The Cologne police have launched a large-scale search for a fugitive criminal. Andre Onstein-Karademir, a 38-year-old inmate at the forensic clinic in Porz-Westhoven, hit the gas on June 16, 2025 during a walk that was accompanied by an employee of the Rhineland Regional Association (LVR) and disappeared into an adjacent forest area. There was no violence towards the employee, reported Express.

Such incidents have been increasing recently. Four criminals recently escaped from a closed clinic in Straubing, Bavaria. These men, who were being held in prison for property and drug crimes, threatened and injured an employee in order to escape. Such cases raise questions about security concepts in forensic facilities and have now also triggered political reactions, such as ZDF reported.

Search details and description of the fugitive

The Cologne police published mugshots of Onstein-Karademir and are asking the public for help. Anyone who sees the man should not speak to him but should call 110 immediately. The last searches around the Gremberger Wäldchen remained unsuccessful until June 17, 2025. Emergency services are deployed with helicopters and sniffer dogs to search possible locations.

The person you are looking for is described as follows:

  • Größe: ca. 1,70 bis 1,80 Meter
  • Kurze, dunkle Haare, Dreitagebart
  • L-förmige Narbe am linken Unterarm und eine weitere Narbe an der linken Hand
  • Tätowierung (Stern) am rechten Oberarm
  • Bekleidung: schwarzes T-Shirt, dunkelblaue Jeans, graue Adidas-Schuhe

Security concerns and social reactions

The penal system offers accommodation options for criminals with mental illnesses who often do not recognize the injustice of their actions. The question arises as to whether the security measures in these facilities are sufficient to prevent such dangerous incidents.

The increasing number of refugees from forensic clinics has caused a stir not only in Cologne, but also in Bavaria. The Bavarian Minister of Social Affairs is now calling for a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and a tightening of security concepts in forensic facilities.

The Cologne police have called on the public to help and are asking witnesses to report information on 0221 229-0 or via email to poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de. A general warning to motorists not to pick up hitchhikers will also be issued.
