Cologne is facing the largest evacuation since the Second World War!
Another major event is looming in Cologne: On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the Deutz district and surrounding areas will be dedicated to bomb defusal. In total, around 20,000 people have to leave their homes due to three World War bombs. The city has declared this measure to be one of the largest evacuations since the Second World War and is preparing accordingly. Express reports that a wide evacuation radius has been established, including numerous municipal buildings as well as large companies.
The last major evacuation took place on May 27, 2015, when a 1,000 kilogram unexploded bomb had to be defused on Kuhweg in Riehl. The Cologne Zoo was also affected by the evacuation back then, which shows that such operations are not uncommon in Cologne. In Cologne, bomb defusing has become commonplace due to the intensive bombing during the Second World War.
Bomb disposal details
On May 16, 2025, an unexploded American bomb was found in Cologne-Lindenthal during excavations to lay an electricity route. This five hundredweight bomb with a rear impact detonator also represents a danger that is scheduled for May 20, 2025. The explosive ordnance disposal service of the Düsseldorf district government and the Cologne city public order office are already active on site to keep the situation under control. An evacuation radius of 300 meters was set, affecting around 2,750 people. The city of Cologne informs affected households in advance and has put protective measures in place for facilities such as the university clinic and the senior citizens' home.
A contact point for residents will be set up in the Rheinenergie Stadium in Cologne-Müngersdorf. The stadium opens at 9 a.m. and pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Residents should think of an alternative location during the evacuation and take important items with them. A shuttle service will be available on May 20th with KVB buses to make mobility easier for those affected.
Experiences from past operations
The last bomb defusals in Cologne often moved large crowds. Some time ago, several thousand residents in Merheim had to leave their homes. At that time, the defused American ten-pound bomb required a controlled explosion, for which large quantities of sand were delivered. ZDF reports on a massive preparation that took place over months, while around 1,300 helpers - from police officers to volunteers - were involved to ensure the safety of citizens.
The city of Cologne appeals to citizens to remain vigilant and to find out in advance about the latest information in the city's media and events. In a tense situation like this, it becomes clear how important the preparation and cooperation of various offices and organizations is to guarantee a smooth evacuation.
