Cologne furniture fair is moving: IDD shows urban designs in the city!
The Cologne furniture fair Interior Design Days Cologne (IDD), will not take place in the Deutz exhibition halls at the end of October 2025. Instead, it will be held at various design locations throughout the city. This decision, which was made by the Cologne trade fair in close cooperation with the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM), aims to make interior design tangible where people live, work and shop.
The new, urban-oriented concept has already attracted over 25 partners, including furniture stores, pop-up concepts, showrooms and design spots. However, some of the well-known interpretations of interior design will be missing: large Italian or Scandinavian manufacturers as well as design brands such as Vitra or Thonet are apparently not among the partners, which raises questions about the breadth of the offering. Nevertheless, the IDD promises an exciting premiere.
Background and development
The creation of the new trade fair format is a direct result of the cancellation of the International Furniture Fair (IMM) for January 2025. The IMM was previously considered one of the most important trade fairs in the industry and attracted 1,230 exhibitors and 130,000 visitors in 2020. Last year, however, only around 42,000 trade visitors came to the 750 exhibitors. The weak year and the uncertainties in the construction industry have taken a toll on the furniture industry.
The differences within the industry ultimately led to the cancellation of the IMM. Premium manufacturers pushed for the date to be changed, so that a two-part concept now applies for the future: IMM will take place annually in January for mass manufacturers, while the premium segment will take place every two years in October.
The IDD offer
The IDD is aimed at both trade visitors and design-loving private visitors. A comprehensive premium product range is offered, including kitchen and bathroom furniture, beds and mattresses as well as decorative lighting. Customizable interior design, art and accessories are also on the program. The hospitality industry and the contract business receive particular attention, as shown on measuring.de is reported.
The exhibition locations include the design showroom Design Post, with which a strategic partnership has been entered into. This and the iconic Moeller fabric pavilion, designed by Wilhelm Riphahn, will be used for both trade fairs and events.
The event will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first day and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the second day. The specific admission prices will be published at a later date, and the trade fair rating system currently gives a recommendation of 0% and ratings of 0, as also on awmagazin.de is to be read.
The industry is now looking forward to the IDD and hopes that this new concept will bring a breath of fresh air to the struggling furniture industry. In times of economic uncertainty, it remains to be seen whether the innovative approach will be effective.
