Serial thief in Cologne central station: arrested after a series of robberies!
A 40-year-old Algerian caused a stir at Cologne Central Station on Tuesday, June 10th. The man was suspected of stealing a wallet from a stationary ICE train. The federal police were alerted by an attentive witness and arrested the perpetrator after the first act of theft Rhenish advertising papers reported.
The thief searched the passengers' bags and jackets during the journey and escaped with a wallet. Even though he was caught quickly, that wasn't the end of his criminal activities for the day. Only a short time later there was a second incident in a snack bar at the train station, where he stole a cell phone. However, this was documented by surveillance cameras, which made his arrest all the more likely.
The arrest and the legal consequences
The federal police, who meticulously searched the area due to the second incident, were soon able to track down the perpetrator on the platform again. After his new arrest, the man, who was already known to the police, was taken into police custody. In the past he has repeatedly appeared for property crimes and now has to answer in court.
The frequency of such thefts is not an isolated case in Germany. In 2022, around 1.78 million theft crimes were registered across Germany, which represents an increase compared to previous years, according to the report Statista. Shoplifting in particular is receiving particular attention: over 344,000 cases were recorded in 2022 alone.
Another example of a criminal record
A month before this incident, on May 21st, the federal police arrested another thief. A 50-year-old man stole two bras from a clothing store and was caught by alert travelers. This shows that crime in the greater Cologne area is very much in the attention of the police and the public. During the same period, the number of shopliftings increased, a trend that the Press portal also noted.
Overall, these incidents illustrate the increasing problem of crime in Germany. Elementary statistics show that thefts occur in many forms and that these crimes are not always solved quickly enough. There is a great need for action, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia, where over 23,500 residential burglaries were recorded in 2022. Despite a clearance rate of 16.1% for residential burglaries, the pressure on the police to deal with such crimes remains high.
