Witnesses urgently wanted: motorcycle drama in Porz-Grengel again!
In the last few weeks, “Alte Kölner Straße” in Porz-Grengel has been making a name for itself again. Even after a tragic traffic accident in which two motorcyclists lost their lives, the route remains a popular terrain for illegal racers. On Sunday evening, August 13, 2025, reports of illegal motorcycle racing on this route known as the speed road increased, which brought the police to the scene.
As Rundschau online reports, a flood of emergency calls were received around 6:45 p.m. from concerned witnesses. They had observed several motorcyclists rushing along the road at excessive speeds. Two of the machines credited for the race are a BMW S 1000 and a flashy orange KTM. At the entrance to Cologne/Bonn Airport there were several spectators who filmed the alleged racing action.
Police investigations and increasing presence
When the police arrived, around 30 motorcyclists were found in a neighboring parking lot. It remains unclear whether these included the actual participants in the race. What is clear, however, is that the Traffic Commissioner 4 has started the investigation on suspicion of a prohibited motor vehicle race. This type of street racing is strictly regulated by law in Germany and is subject to high penalties, as the ADAC points out. Illegal street racing is considered dangerous, not only for the participants but also for other road users.
After the deadly incident on July 25, police have increased surveillance of the area around the airport. In order to counteract the speeding problem, regular unannounced speed checks take place. The police are also participating in the nationwide “2-Wheelers” campaign to raise awareness of motorcycle safety. Educational materials, such as an original accident vehicle, are also used to illustrate the dangers of the lawn.
Speeding problem in Cologne
The recurrence of such incidents has worried residents in the area, who continue to report problems with speeders. The risk is particularly high at the entrances and exits to parking lots. The “Alte Kölner Straße” connects the Grengeler Mauspfad with the Rhein-Sieg district and is a popular path not only for daring drivers, but also for many citizens.
But the issue is not only important locally. The phenomenon of illegal street racing has also increased throughout Germany in recent years. Around 6,900 such races were registered in Germany in 2024, compared to around 4,300 in 2020. The races mentioned here as examples are not only illegal, but also extremely dangerous, as Wikipedia explains. The consequences for those involved should not be underestimated: in addition to fines, there is also a risk of imprisonment, especially if people are injured during a race.
The situation in Cologne clearly shows that there is a great need for action here. The police will continue to intensively investigate the background to these races and hope for the support of the citizens. Anyone who witnesses illegal activity is asked to come forward. Only together can we master the danger on the streets.
