Safe routes to school: 2.54 million euros for the renovation of Siegburger Straße!

Siegburger Straße in Cologne is about to undergo a major redesign project that is intended to significantly improve traffic safety for the students of the Janusz Korczak School and the residents. From 2026, a total of 2.54 million euros will flow into extensive renovation work, which will take around 15 months. The plan includes a new traffic light system, the installation of a crossing at the intersection of Siegburger Straße/Auf dem Sandberg and structural processing of the pedestrian and cycle path to ensure a clear separation from the road. As rheinische-anzeigenblaetter.de reports, the approval of the city council on July 3, 2025 is necessary to put the measures into action.

The importance of this transformation becomes particularly clear in connection with the safety of school routes. The goal is to create safe access to the Janusz Korczak School in Cologne-Poll and to promote children's mobility. The planned measures are a step in the right direction in order to take legal requirements to improve road safety into account. In addition to the installation of new traffic lights, further measures such as the redesign of the parking lane with 20 new trees and bicycle parking facilities as well as the creation of a green central island between the directional lanes are planned, as confirmed by the City of Cologne.

Improvements in public transport

Another focus is on adapting local public transport. The bus stops on KVB line 159 will be made barrier-free to provide better access for all passengers. In addition, a final stop for the future KVB line 150 will be set up on the corner of “Im Forst”, which will be equipped with a bus bay for electrically powered buses. These measures aim to improve the traffic situation not only for students, but also for the entire neighborhood.

Safe routes to school for children

The issue of safe routes to school is not only important in Cologne. An action alliance, consisting of the Kidical Mass Action Alliance, the German Children's Fund and the VCD, has published a legal opinion that shows options for establishing school streets. As the VCD explains, school streets could be set up both temporarily and permanently to improve road safety for children. These could be closed to motor traffic during school hours, creating a safe space to play and relax. Cities like Cologne have already started the first pilot projects that will be expanded in the near future.

The redesign of Siegburger Straße not only represents a response to the needs of the local community, but is also part of a larger trend towards greater traffic safety and child-friendly mobility.
