Cologne Volunteering: Ten ways you can help now!

Volunteering is booming in Cologne! According to a Forsa survey from 2024, around 45% of Cologne residents are active in voluntary work. This shows that there is great interest in volunteering in the cathedral city and that many people are willing to work for others. There are numerous ways to get involved in a meaningful way, from animal protection to supporting refugees. 24rhein has presented ten different volunteer positions that are spread across the entire city.

Among the highlight offerings is the Gut Leidenhausen wildlife rescue station, which takes in injured or orphaned animals. The volunteers look after the animals, take care of feeding, caring for them and even public relations. A great commitment that offers great fulfillment not only to animals, but also to those helping. If you have a more human focus, you can work with the Kölner Herzkissen e.V. and make pillows for breast cancer patients. The contact address iskoelner.herzkissen@thls.de.

Versatile options for committed people

The St. Elisabeth Hospital is looking for volunteers who can give patients friendly attention. Here you make a difference in people's lives Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Don't worry, you don't need any previous knowledge! If you want to support new parents, you can get involved with KiWi. Volunteers visit new parents, bring gifts and share important information. Contact:kiwi@stadt-koeln.de.

Another important project is Limitless in Movement e.V., where volunteers help with the sporting integration of refugees. Be it as a trainer or in the organization – everyone can do their part here. Directly in the area of social integration you can also find Ceno & Die Paten e.V., which offers short-term sponsorships for refugees. Not only are official matters coordinated, but joint leisure activities are also organized.

Environmental awareness and support for those in need

For environmentally conscious Cologne residents, there is the Kölle putzmunter initiative, which organizes garbage collection campaigns. The AWB Cologne actively supports this. The reading mentors offer a great opportunity for anyone who would like to help children. Here, students and young people are supported in reading; regular meetings are necessary for this. Older citizens don't miss out in Cologne either: Radeln ohne Alter Köln e.V. organizes rickshaw rides for seniors and people with limited mobility who are otherwise no longer mobile. The contact overflowsjoin@radelnohnealter.koeln. In addition, Sack e.V. is committed to helping people below the poverty line by distributing food. Contact:dersack@sack-ev.de.

The Cologne Volunteer Agency also offers an excellent contact point for anyone who would like to get involved. Here you can get advice and find a database of local volunteer positions. There are no costs for this offer. So anyone who has a good knack for social projects will find what they are looking for here and at the same time can help ensure that volunteer work in Cologne remains so popular. AWO Cologne shows how important voluntary commitment to the community is, which brings both personal fulfillment and a valuable contribution to society.
