New marketplace in Cologne-Poll: SPD is planning a green oasis and playground!

Something is happening in Cologne-Poll: The SPD has great ideas for the market square at the “Poll Salmstraße” stop on KVB line 7. After long years of waiting, the Social Democrats are planning a real transformation of this square, which has so far been used primarily for the weekly market on Fridays. The aim is to make the market square a lively meeting place that offers a high quality of stay and security, in keeping with the spirit of the local election campaign, in which the SPD has repeatedly taken up the call for change.

The suggestions are diverse and promising: In addition to more green spaces and a new fountain, a new playground is to be built. The plan also includes catering in the form of stands and a new kiosk, which is to be expanded to include a public toilet facility. All of this is intended to make the marketplace not only more beautiful, but also more functional. Another significant project is the integration of a pedestrian and cycle path network in order to increase the feeling of safety of all users.

A place for festivals and markets

The square will also be used for concerts, festivals and flea markets in the future. With these measures, the SPD aims to create a “Veedelsgarage” in the area to provide additional parking spaces. The marketplace remains car-free, with the only exceptions being the market feeders. In order to promote the design, the SPD equipped election posters with QR codes that direct citizens directly to their sketch ideas for the square.

A central concern is that the Poller Marktplatz becomes a real contact point for all citizens. “We would like to create more options for citizens, such as a drinking water fountain, which was already proposed and decided in 2023,” explains the SPD. There are also some proposals from the CDU and the Greens to develop a comprehensive usage concept. The two parties have already expressed interest and are working on a plan that also includes public toilets and a chess area.

Future prospects and citizen participation

The planned usage concept will also include ideas such as a traffic practice area for children and stops for savings and book buses. Local events such as wine days, a fish market or a food truck event are also on the wish list. Citizen engagement is also seen as an essential part of ensuring that residents' wishes are incorporated into planning.

It remains to be seen how the plans develop and whether these ideas will soon become reality. But one thing is certain: Poller Marktplatz has the potential for a thriving community.
