Police strike: Brazen car stealers caught in Dellbrück!
A suspected car stolen vehicle is causing a stir in Cologne-Dellbrück. On Monday evening, August 25th, police officers caught two men who had offered a VW Tayron rented in Hamburg for sale via an internet platform. This put a 34-year-old interested party in a tricky situation that ultimately ended with the police being notified. He and his companions had a bad feeling when looking at the car and immediately informed the Kalk police station Cologne City Gazette reported.
A first look at the vehicle revealed the first discrepancies: the Cologne license plates were registered for a completely different type of vehicle - a VW Golf. But that's not enough. That night the “sellers” contacted us again and agreed on a new meeting point. Police responded immediately and arrested a 44-year-old man, where officers discovered fake vehicle documents.
The arrest and its consequences
The situation escalated further when the seller's 21-year-old alleged accomplice showed up at the police in Düsseldorf the following night and stated that he had stolen the rental car. However, his testimony was far from convincing and he quickly attracted the attention of investigators. Now he is charged with pretending to commit a crime. The 44-year-old, who already had an arrest warrant for endangering road traffic, is also facing serious legal consequences and will be brought before a judge, as the press portal reports.
Be careful when buying a vehicle online
These events shed light on the dangers of buying a car online. According to the ADAC, you should be vigilant when it comes to tempting offers, as fraudsters are often just a click away. Caution is particularly advised with platforms such as AutoScout24 or mobile.de, as they do not check the seriousness of providers. Common scams include fake vehicle documents or offers that are too good to be true, as ADAC provides detailed information.
If you still want to get a good deal, you should definitely carry out a careful inspection and insist on meeting at the registration office to re-register the vehicle. If you're not careful, you could end up with a car that doesn't have the right documents or is even reported stolen. It is advisable not to pay any deposits and to travel with the seller to a suitable location.
Finally, the Cologne police advise not to hesitate if you suspect fraud and to contact the police immediately. An unpleasant surprise can quickly hide behind the digital scenes - and a good hand when buying a car can often be the key to a really good deal.
