Arson attack in Berlin: Police investigate mysterious letter of confession

A highly dangerous incident occurred in Berlin, which not only affected numerous households in the southeast of Berlin, but also caused political waves. On Tuesday morning, more precisely at 3:30 a.m., the emergency numbers 110 and 112, which could not be reached via mobile communications in some regions due to the power outage, were called. The police assume a politically motivated arson attack was directed against two high-voltage pylons in the Johannisthal district. According to the Review online Unknown people started the fire, possibly using an accelerant such as gasoline.

This attack left its mark - around 50,000 households and companies were affected by the power outage. Shops remained closed and public transport was severely restricted. It took the fire department more than an hour to extinguish the fire, which affected several power lines in the Treptow-Köpenick district. Several trams had also broken down and had to be towed from the affected zones, such as the German wave reported.

Political motivation and the authorities' responses

The investigation, which was taken over by the state security agency of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office, also focuses on a cold case that was published on the radical left-wing website “Indymedia”. This letter of responsibility was directed against the Adlershof Technology Park, where a development center for the electric car manufacturer Tesla is planned. This suggests a possible connection to the current political tensions regarding the development of electromobility in Germany.

The circumstances of the incident raise questions that go beyond the immediate impact. The numbers on right-wing extremism and left-wing extremism in Germany have risen alarmingly, and the current Office for the Protection of the Constitution points to a 40 percent increase in politically motivated crimes compared to the previous year, according to the ZDF today reported. The scene is more violent and dynamic than ever.

Looking back at the past few years, a worrying trend appears to be emerging: the number of right-wing extremist people in Germany has exceeded 50,000 and acts of violence have almost doubled. The increase in left-wing extremist groups cannot be overlooked either. In this tense situation, the investigations in Berlin are particularly explosive.

The Berlin police have already started collecting evidence at the crime scene, although work on restoring the power supply can only begin once these measures have been completed. It remains to be seen what further information and possibly new developments will result from these investigations and how the debate about political motives and extremist tendencies in Germany will develop further.
