The anticipation in Cologne is increasing! From December 12, 2025, Cologne Zoo will be lit up with the spectacular “China Lights” event. In a light-filled spectacle, visitors will immerse themselves in a magical world that features more than 1,400 glowing figures and 64 impressive light ensembles, such as Review online reported. With over 4,000 eco-friendly LED lights spanning more than 15,000 meters of fairy lights, the zoo grounds are transformed into a glittering fairytale landscape. The event will take place on an area of 20 hectares and in many places you can admire the light works of art created especially for this time of year.
Fascination with Asian culture
The focus is particularly on topics relating to Asian animals and fantasy figures. Among the highlights, an impressive 25-meter-long cobra at the entrance will show where the journey is going, and a 30-meter-long Argentinosaurus will be awe-inspiring in the middle of a volcanic landscape. Anyone who is interested in history will certainly take the figures of extinct animals such as the woolly rhinoceros or the dodo to their hearts, of course always in the context of the exciting connection to the Dinoworld special show with realistically designed dinosaurs such as the T-Rex or the Triceratops.
The 12 meter high volcano promises a special experience and will be a magnet for photo sessions. In addition, ten interactive hands-on stations, such as the “light-up magic wheel” and the giant owl, invite visitors to get active and immerse themselves in the magical world.
Practical information
Advance sales of tickets for “China Lights” have already started, so early bookers can benefit from attractive prices. Adults pay 24 euros for time-limited tickets, children aged 4 to 12 only 12 euros. For more flexible options, voucher tickets are available, costing 28 euros for adults and 15 euros for children.
Event hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The show will be open until February 1, 2026 and, in addition to the impressive light installations, also includes various culinary offerings and photo point activities that make the visit an unforgettable experience. Construction for the light show begins on November 25th.
