Cologne Rhine culvert: New tunnel drilling section successfully completed!

The Cologne city drainage company (StEB) has taken a promising step in the city's infrastructure: successfully completing the first section of the new Rhine culvert. After intensive eight weeks of hard work, the “Henriette” tunnel boring machine has drilled an impressive tube with a length of 940 meters and a diameter of 3.2 meters. The tunneling started in the Cologne district of Stammheim and ended at Niehler Damm. This new culvert will not only secure wastewater disposal in Cologne in the long term, but will also replace the existing pipes that have been in use since 1928 and which no longer meet modern requirements.

The Rhine culvert represents an important connection between the canal network on the left bank of the Rhine and the Cologne-Stammheim sewage treatment plant. This sewage treatment plant is responsible for cleaning more than 80 percent of Cologne's wastewater. In terms of investments, StEB Cologne needs to raise around 110 million euros to realize this important infrastructure project. The full commissioning of the Rhine culvert is planned for 2028, which shows that there is a lot of movement in Cologne's wastewater disposal system.

Sustainable solutions for Cologne

The successful completion of the first advance is just the beginning. After this first tube, the excavation of the second tube, which will have a smaller diameter, will also begin. The “Janine” tunnel boring machine will be used for this from autumn 2025. This shows StEB's commitment to making the city's wastewater disposal future-proof with sustainable solutions.

In summary, the Rhine culvert is a groundbreaking project for the city of Cologne that takes both technical and economic aspects into account and forms the basis for modern and safe wastewater disposal. A really good example of how urban infrastructure can be improved through innovative projects. So the townspeople can be happy – a lot will happen here in the coming years!
