Smart spatial solutions: Cologne architect inspires at Architecture Day!
A very special highlight is on the agenda for those interested in architecture in Cologne this coming weekend. The Architecture Day will take place on June 28th and 29th and attracts people to the city with many exciting projects and guided tours. The motto “Conversions and Redesigns” shows how creative thinking and modern design are closely linked. A prime example of this are Bruno and Mateo, two 13-year-old twins, whose needs were taken into account with clever interior design in their condominium in Sülz.
The Cologne architect Maria Nagy was hired to create a harmonious layout in the twins' 23 square meter room. The challenge: An immovable window and the electrical distribution had to be taken into account. But she found an innovative solution with a clever design that uses a curved wall to divide the rooms. The beds are now on platforms under which practical wardrobes are hidden. On Saturday at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Mary Nagy will present her implementation on site and show how to deal more creatively with a lack of space.
Diverse architectural landscape in Cologne
Architecture Day not only draws attention to the successful redesign of the twin room. A total of ten exciting construction projects are being presented in Cologne, including the Alte Feuerwache wood workshop, the new Deutz high school and the renovated headquarters of the Automobile Club Verkehr in Rodenkirchen. The Rheinische Musikschule also invites you to visit Ehrenfeld. The large number of projects impressively demonstrates the creative diversity and innovative power of architecture in Cologne.
On Sunday, June 29th, Maria Nagy will also offer a tour of the “Loft T” at Asbergplatz 2, which has been transformed from a dark attic into a light-flooded room with large windows. A well thought-out concept ensures that the charm of the old building is retained even after the rotten wooden beams have been replaced and the outdoor terrace has been redesigned. Tours are also scheduled at 2, 3 and 4 p.m.
A paradigm shift in architecture
It is not without reason that the focus on renovations and adaptations has become more important. The publication “Conversion Culture – For an Architecture of Change” addresses this development and shows that conversions can provide an answer to the current ecological challenges facing the construction industry. Loud Building culture in North Rhine-Westphalia The preservation of older buildings is crucial for sustainable urban development. The understanding of architects has changed in recent years: there is increasing appreciation for the idea that the reuse of existing structures can not only make sense, but also be architecturally valuable.
As part of a discourse on Urban Future Forum It was emphasized that building culture in Germany must take the concerns of rethinking seriously. It is time for the focus to move away from demolition and new construction towards a respectful treatment of the existing building stock. The federal government is also planning to create new political framework conditions that support conversion and renovation. A real step in the right direction!
For everyone interested in architecture and urban development, this weekend will be a true celebration of the art of architecture. Many suggestions and ideas are waiting to be discovered. Participation in Architecture Day could therefore be the first step towards a more sustainable future – for architecture and for the city of Cologne.
