Cologne loses three Michelin stars: the shock for the catering trade!
Köln, Deutschland - The catering scene in Cologne has suffered a bitter setback. At this year's awarding of the Michelin stars, the city had to accept a loss of three stars on Tuesday evening, which reduced the total number to nine. Cologne is now shared first in North Rhine-Westphalia with Düsseldorf, which also owns nine star restaurants. A bitter loss for the Rhenish culinary delights!
The loss of the star for the “Maibeck” restaurant was particularly painful, which was available after 14 years without such an award. Boss Jan C. Maier and Tobias Becker were disappointed and could not understand the decision because they had always delivered consistently high quality. The team felt particularly affected because they had invested a lot in their restaurant.
neobiota and its change
The same thing happened to the "Neobiota" restaurant, which after moving to a new location also lost the Michelin star. Erik Scheffler expressed resentment about the Michelin testers, who, despite increasing the capacities for dinner from 25 to 40 and for breakfast from 28 to 100 guests, led his restaurant closed. "Neobiota" tries to offer guests an uncomplicated and tasty experience without special dress code or brunch offers and relies on sustainable restaurants.Although the "Neobiota" is part of the Casual Fine Dining scene, it was not recognized as desired this year. The unpredictability of the Michelin system causes some chef to despair, while others, like Daniel Gottschlich from the "Ox & Klee", who again received two stars, were lucky. Gottschlich emphasizes the importance of his strong team.
Cologne's culinary future
Despite the disappointment, there is hope for positive developments. The "Fine Food Days Cologne" express their regret about the stars taken and rely on a return to previous successes. There are still numerous restaurants in Cologne with a star, including "Le Moissonnier", "Pottkind" and "Sahila". The competition in the city remains strong, especially since the total number of Michelin stars in North Rhine-Westphalia has reduced from 52 to 46. Throughout Germany there are currently 341 stars.
Essen does not remain unnoticed with its three star restaurants, but no restaurant in NRW seems to be able to venture to the top of this award at the moment. A look at Berlin shows that with 22 award-winning restaurants the gourmet sky is bright.
While the awarding of the stars has a major impact on the restaurant landscape, the uncertainty always remains in advance. This year Cologne has shown impressively that the way to the culinary olympus remains rocky-outstanding food alone does not always seem to be enough to convince the testers.
