Cologne receives new municipal operations for a billion-euro project!

The megacity of Cologne is taking big steps into the future: The city is planning to set up a new municipal company for the ambitious “Parkstadt Süd” construction project. Among other things, thousands of jobs and over 3,000 new apartments are to be created here. The city council has scheduled a crucial meeting for early July 2025 in which the establishment of the company will be voted on. The starting signal for the new company should then take place on January 1, 2026 radio cologne reported.

What can citizens expect in Cologne? The “Parkstadt Süd” will offer an urban district that will not only provide living space, but also social infrastructure, retail and offices. Particular attention is paid to creating new green spaces and completing the inner green belt. This urban development project, which is estimated to cost more than one billion euros, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

The details of the location are remarkable: The planning area, which covers a large area of around 46 hectares, extends over the districts of Zollstock, Raderberg, Bayenthal and Neustadt-Süd. To be more precise, the area is bordered in the north by the railway areas, in the east by the Rhine, in the south by the future “neighborhood development” development plan and in the west by existing developments on Höninger Weg. At the moment, railway lines, traffic areas and green spaces can be found there, as explained on the City of Cologne website.

Integration into the Green Belt

A central goal of the planning is to integrate the new city quarter into the Inner Green Belt, the largest green area in Cologne city center. This extends from the Rhine to Luxemburger Strasse and plays an important role in the structure and ventilation of the dense city body. Urban development will therefore not only create housing, but also promote a sustainable urban environment - a true asset for the city, in line with the national urban development policy. This is supported by the federal government in collaboration with various associations and ministries in order to offer cities and municipalities basic development aid, as explained by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction bmwsb.

It remains to be seen how the development of “Parkstadt Süd” will progress, but the signs are good. Through the coordinated planning and commitment of the project development company “moderne stadt” GmbH, which is taking over the operational business, the city of Cologne will retain control over the project and ensure that the interests of the citizens are taken into account. The planned project has the potential to have a lasting impact on the cityscape and create new living space in one of the most vibrant cities in Germany.

Cologne is calling for the first implementations and can soon move into a new era of urban development.
