Massive drug and money discoveries: Cologne police strike!

On the night of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Kalk focal point team once again caused a stir in Cologne. Extensive checks and searches uncovered numerous violations of the Narcotics Act. This shows once again how urgently the police are needed to keep order in the city.

The team checked a total of 55 people and filed 11 criminal complaints. Expulsions were also issued while several vehicles were searched. A striking event of the night was the discovery of a live firearm in the footwell of a car in which a 23-year-old driver was sitting under the influence of cannabis. A blood sample was taken to determine the driver's exact condition.

Special finds in different parts of the city

In Höhenberg, the police made another interesting discovery: the 23-year-old man, who claimed to be the person in charge of a casino, had 42,400 euros in cash in the vehicle. The money was seized because there was suspicion of a violation of the tax code. The investigation into this case is ongoing, while the police in Humboldt-Gremberg arrested a 26-year-old man in a drug discovery. Officers found cocaine, hashish, MDMA and suspected deal money on him. A voluntary search of the apartment also revealed additional cocaine, pregabalin and 1,650 euros in denominations typical of the scene.

In Kalk, the police also encountered Marco, a 23-year-old unlicensed driver who tried to deny his brother's identity. His companion, a 22-year-old man, was equally unlucky when he tried to switch driver roles during a check. The third actor, a 28-year-old man who was already known as a drug dealer, was carrying 2,140 euros in cash, which was also seized due to contradictory information.

General security situation and police interventions

The situation in Cologne reflects a general trend in which firearm use by police in Germany increased in 2024. According to ZDF, the number of fatal police shootings rose to a record high last year. With a total of 22 cases, it surpasses all previous years since counting began in 1977. On average, around 130 shots are fired at people per year, although most are not fatal. In Germany, the use of firearms is clearly defined by law and is mainly used for serious crimes or to ward off life-threatening attacks.

The police union is now calling for improved networking between the authorities in order to be able to react more quickly to suspects with mental illnesses. Rising violent crime is identified as the primary cause of the rise in fatal police shootings, and calls are being made for widespread adoption of Tasers as a de-escalation measure.

What remains is the realization that the work of the Cologne police is essential for security in the city. The ongoing investigation from the night shows that there remain many challenges to overcome as officials do everything they can to keep public life safe.
