Viktoria Köln: Double reinforcement for defense and attack!
The transfer period brings a breath of fresh air to Cologne! With the signing of Leander Popp and Verthomy Boboy, Viktoria Köln has brought two new players on board to strengthen both the offense and defense. On July 11, 2025, the Cologne team announced that Popp would be loaned from second division club Greuther Fürth for a season. The 20-year-old center forward already has experience from the 2nd Bundesliga, where he played in ten games. Before his time in Fürth, he moved there from Hertha BSC in January 2024.
For Popp, who can also play on the wings, the loan was an important step in getting himself back into the game. “I’m looking forward to the home games and Viktoria Köln’s playing system,” he said optimistically about his new challenge. Sports director Stephan Kusters praised him as a strong one-on-one player who can both prepare goals and score them himself. Popp was born in Berlin and is officially active at Viktoria for the new season.
Return to home country
In addition to Popp's commitment, Verthomy Boboy, a native of Cologne, is returning to his hometown. The 22-year-old is moving from Standard Liège to Viktoria Köln and brings with him impressive tackling skills and a good ball game. Boboy began his career at Fortuna Cologne and has already gained a lot of experience in the U19 team at VfL Bochum. Last season he made 30 appearances for Standard Liège's U21 team.
“I want to be part of Viktoria Köln and am looking forward to returning here,” said Boboy, who hopes to prove his skills in the regional league. His return is eagerly awaited by fans as he grew up in the city and took his first footballing steps here.
Full of anticipation for the new season
With these two new additions, Viktoria Köln shows that they are by no means idle and are strategically preparing for the coming season. On August 2nd, the Cologne team starts the new season with a home game against the newly promoted team from Schweinfurt. The anticipation is great, both among the players and the fans. The new reinforcements could be crucial to how well the team performs.
The transfer activities in the past few weeks have not only been notable at Viktoria Köln. The entire football world is experiencing a dynamic space where clubs can loan, buy or sell players. However, as an analysis shows, there are big differences in the transfer fees and financial possibilities of different clubs. In the Bundesliga, for example, there was a transfer deficit in the 2024/2025 season, with expenses exceeding income.
With the targeted new additions, the Cologne team hope to further establish themselves in the regional league and possibly even set their sights on promotion. In the tough competition, it will be crucial whether the new players find their way into the team quickly and can successfully exploit their strengths.
The entire fan base of Viktoria Köln wants an exciting season with high-class games and enough reason to celebrate!
