Triathlon hype in Cologne: 4000 participants and a new cycling route are waiting!

On September 7th, 2025, Cologne will be the venue for a sporting highlight: the Carglass Triathlon will take place for the fourth time and will delight with a large number of athletes and exciting distances. With around 4,000 participants, including both experienced and amateur athletes, the event is very popular.

Triathlon requires not only endurance but also skill from athletes. The event includes three disciplines: swimming in the Rhine, cycling along the Rhine and running to Cologne Cathedral. The new cycle route leads over the Deutzer Bridge and the Rheinuferstrasse to Fühlinger See, after half of the Deutzer Bridge is closed. With the middle distance of 75 km, the Olympic distance of 40 km and the sprint distance of 20 km, there is something for everyone. Middle distance participants have to complete two laps of the bike course, while the Olympians complete one lap.

A big event in beautiful surroundings

The triathlon gets a special flair thanks to the picturesque backdrop of the Rhine and the Cologne skyline. The running route leads from the Tanzbrunnen over the Hohenzollern Bridge and allows participants to experience the city from a unique perspective. Depending on the distance, one to four laps have to be completed. There is also a special relay category that is particularly suitable for newcomers and friendship teams to take part in the Olympic or medium-long distance.

The Carglass Triathlon has even made it to the silver level in the Professional Triathlon Organization (PTO) ranking and offers prize money totaling 24,800 euros. This also makes the event extremely attractive for professionals in the scene, including well-known names such as Fabian Kraft and Emil Holm, who are among the participants.

Safety comes first

Despite the ban on swimming in the Rhine, which applies to other occasions, the triathlon receives a special permit, which is a great promise to the swimmers. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) secures the swimming route and points out that participants are required to wear wetsuits. Safety is very important when swimming in order to guide everyone involved well through the flowing waters.

In a current discussion, the Allianz Kölner Sport pointed out structural deficits that Cologne experiences in the organization of sporting events. Nevertheless, it is clear that major sporting events like this triathlon represent an important piece of identity for the city. Endurancesport GmbH, organizer of such events, emphasizes the importance of sport and is optimistic about the future of triathlon in Cologne.

Triathlon is also trendy: around 600 triathlon events take place in Germany every year, which illustrates the increasing popularity of this sport. This underlines Cologne's role in these great events and proves that the heart of the city also beats for the sport of triathlon. Last but not least, you can say: If you're in Cologne on September 7th, you can't miss the triathlon!
