Thielmann shines in the 4-0 win – FC Köln ready for the new season!

A successful dress rehearsal for 1. FC Cologne! In the last test match before the DFB Cup opener against SSV Jahn Regensburg on August 17th, the Rhinelanders showed an impressive performance. In their home RheinEnergieStadion they defeated Atalanta Bergamo's Champions League team 4-0. The stadium was packed with 40,100 spectators.

23-year-old Jan Thielmann was beaming in the interview zone after the game. After a difficult period in which he was pushed back and forth on the pitch, he was now in top form. He crowned his performance with two goals, which he scored in the 26th and 58th minutes, and recently extended his contract with FC until 2028. “It was fun and the team is ready for the first competitive game,” enthused Thielmann.

New faces, old strengths

Under new coach Lukas Kwasniok, FC Cologne has a fresh look. Six new players were in the starting line-up, including Jakub Kaminski, who made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute. Kwasniok particularly praised the intensity of his new signing Kaminski: “He showed exactly what we were hoping for.” The track players Sebastian Sebulonsen and Kristoffer Lund also fit seamlessly into the game.

However, the encounter was not just a demonstration of offensive power. Atalanta Bergamo, which started with a strong line-up, rarely found a dangerous path to Cologne's goal despite several attempts. Particularly noteworthy were the two shots that hit the crossbar before Thielmann scored the first goal for the home team.

The path to the cup round

With this success behind them, FC Cologne is optimistic about the challenges ahead. However, Kwasniok pointed out that the start of the cup will be a different house number: “The next game against Jahn Regensburg will be completely different.” The coach also plans not to establish permanent staff, but rather to work with a flexible starting eleven, which should promote both competition and team identity.

Captain Marius Bülter, one of the new additions, led the team and showed that FC is not only strong in terms of width, but also in depth. Timo Hübers was the only field player who played through, while Kwasniok only took advantage of his substitution opportunities after 63 minutes.

With this strong performance behind them, the Cologne team is optimistic about the coming season. The coaching staff did a great job in the last five weeks of preparation. The players like Thielmann are motivated, the euphoria is great, but the newcomer warns: “We mustn’t get overconfident now, it was just a test game.” Good advice that brings the team back down to earth and at the same time increases anticipation for the start of the season.
