While the sun's rays flood the outdoor pools in Cologne with summer warmth, the project ensures “THE SUN AND US” the University Hospital of Cologne ensures that outdoor pool visitors not only feel comfortable but are also well protected. In cooperation with KölnBäder, the exciting information campaign “UV protection in the outdoor pool – do a sun check” is running in August. This is a fun way to draw attention to the dangers of excessive UV radiation.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among outdoor pool guests about the risks of UV radiation. The project is largely supported by the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Cologne and the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) supports. Why UV protection is so important
Good UV protection is particularly important in the mid-summer months, when UV rays are strongest around midday. As the World Health Organization explains, UV levels are particularly high during this time because the sun's rays take a more direct route to the earth. In addition, different surfaces reflect UV radiation to different degrees, which means that you should be particularly careful near water or on light-colored surfaces.
Did you know that fresh snow can reflect up to 80% of UV radiation? Even if the outdoor pool is not covered in snow, visitors should always apply sunscreen to prevent skin damage. Even on cloudy days, it is possible to get sunburned as UV rays can be strong.
The “THE SONNE AND WE” initiative is not only a clever move against the sun, but also helps to increase awareness of UV protection among outdoor pool visitors in Cologne.
