Weird birds: Singing together and loneliness defeated in Cologne!
A touch of music and creativity runs through the city of Cologne! On July 5, 2025, two initiatives of the Evangelical Church Association of Cologne and region were awarded the renowned ChriMon Prize. The award winners, the project "Weird Birds" in Junkersdorf and the innovative "mothers" in the Church Circle of Cologne-Rheinisch, contribute decisively to community formation and well-being in the region. While "mothers" is still waiting for details of the award ceremony, "weird birds" has already achieved remarkable successes in the music category and can look forward to a prize money of 2000 euros.
But what is the name of the name "sloping birds"? This project brings together young and older people to promote singing generation. Founded two years ago, the choir offers a platform for everyone who enjoys singing, regardless of previous experience or vocal talent. The line is particularly remarkable by a blind pianist who adapts the songs individually so that every participant can celebrate. In addition, the members gather in the parish hall every two weeks, where, in addition to the singing, sociable get -together with coffee and tea is very important.
Community in the Singkreis
The initiative pursues the goal of counteracting loneliness and creating a real community. "Many older people have the desire to sing, but they often lack the opportunity," explains Heike Zeeh, who supports the project as a social worker. The positive response from the neighborhood shows that "weird birds" are not only well received by older, but also delights younger people. They regularly appear at events such as the summer festival or Christmas bazaar and delight with a varied repertoire that ranges from spiritual songs to old hit to folk songs.
How important such initiatives are, is also evident in the world of music therapy, which indicates the positive effects of music for older people. This can not only increase emotional well -being, but also strengthen the interpersonal connection. Here music becomes a quality of life, which underlines the commitment of "weird birds". Promoting similarities is the motto that runs through the music and revives the flow of life in our community.
creative through the summer
But not only in the field of music it gets creative. An entertaining crafting event recently took place in the Langsche Humdelscheune, in which children created their own "weird birds" from Pappmaché. Under the guidance of Michy Lang and her helpers Inge Reck and Dana Flamm immersed the children into the world of colors. Small snippets were made with a colorful mix of paper and processed into colorful bird figures in loving work. While the parts of the body dried, the children could let their imagination run wild and shape wings, hats and tails. Muffins and drinks took care of the physical well -being and round off the colorful afternoon.
The diverse activities, be they musical or creative nature, show how colorful and alive life in Cologne is. It is to be hoped that such initiatives will continue to exist to promote cohesion and cooperation in the city. Damage caused by loneliness can be broken down and joie de vivre in every age group.
