Summer holidays in Cologne: Traffic chaos due to construction sites begins!

With the start of the summer holidays in Cologne on July 14th until August 26th, 2025, the construction sites will also be back. Significant traffic disruptions are expected in the city in the coming weeks. The Rheinufertunnel, which will be completely closed on several weekends, will be particularly affected. This puts a lot of pressure on drivers' nerves, as around 100,000 vehicles pass through this tunnel every day.

The renovation work in the Rheinufer Tunnel has been in full swing since July 8th. Attention will be paid to the flood protection facilities, which urgently needed to be replaced. These were already in a modest condition and the channels used to lower the flood protection gates were over 40 years old. During floods, these gates close both entrances and exits, highlighting the urgency of the work. How ksta.de reported, the renovations were originally planned for the summer of 2024, but were postponed to this summer due to high costs. The total costs are estimated at 750,000 euros.

Closures and diversions

Overall, the Rheinufertunnel will be completely closed on the following weekends:

  • 11. bis 14. Juli 2025
  • 18. bis 21. Juli 2025
  • 25. bis 28. Juli 2025
  • 1. bis 4. August 2025
  • 12. bis 15. September 2025
  • 19. bis 22. September 2025

One lane will also be closed during the week, but one lane will always remain passable in each direction. Partial closures of up to two lanes may occur during nighttime work. Detours have been put in place to take the north-south route.

But that's not all that Cologne road users can expect. The Deutzer Bridge will also be renovated starting today, July 14, 2025. Here the bridge is completely closed in the direction of Deutz, so that a diversion over the Severins Bridge is necessary. In addition, road renovation work will be carried out on Mindener Straße until September 20, 2025.

Further traffic measures

From mid-August, the intersection area of Sürther Straße/Grüngurtelstraße in Rodenkirchen will also be rebuilt. This measure is intended to increase road safety and is expected to take six months. Another project concerns the redesign of Gummersbacher Straße, which will also be started on July 14th. The aim is to create a continuous cycle lane in the direction of Kalk.

In Ehrenfeld, a walking and cycling path will be created on Teichrohrsängerweg between July 28th and August 26th to increase safety for school children. And Deutsche Bahn is also making changes: From August 8, 2025, the first partial closures of the “Innere Kanalstrasse” railway bridge in Nippes will be necessary.

The Cologne city administration regularly informs citizens about the construction sites and the status of work. You can do this on the website of antenna.nrw which provides comprehensive reports on the current traffic disruptions during the summer holidays. And if you have the patience, you can also keep an eye on the traffic jam reports in Cologne, like on staumelder-karte.de can be found.

The summer holidays not only bring relaxation, but also a lot of construction sites and traffic disruptions. If you want to cross the city during this time, you should prepare well and possibly plan alternative routes!
