Cleanliness in Cologne: Together against garbage on World Cleanup Day!
Recently, Cologne has been perceived as increasingly littered, although there are also voices that say cleanliness is improving. In view of the upcoming events next weekend, where numerous great events await the people of Cologne, World Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 21st will be put in the spotlight. On this day, citizens are called upon to give their favorite places in parks and along the streets a breath of fresh air and to collect garbage. The day is all about shared commitment to a clean environment and takes place as part of the “Kölle putzmunter” initiative, which is supported by various local organizations, including AWB Cologne and Cologne City Marketing. The focus is on reducing carelessly thrown away waste and making the city cleaner and more inviting. Mysuedstadt reports that the first implementation of this charming campaign took place last year and mobilized many volunteers.
A quick look at the events for the coming weekend shows that there is something for every taste. The “Längste Desch vun Kölle” street festival is celebrated in the Severinsviertel on Saturday and Sunday. Here you can enjoy the hustle and bustle from 12:00 p.m. Sports enthusiasts shouldn't miss the regional league game between Fortuna Cologne and Vorwärts Spoho Cologne, which will take place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with free admission. There is also a lot on offer for little Cologne residents at World Children's Day at Rheinauhafen: a games festival from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. promises fun and action for the youngest. At the same time, the children's theater play “Tafiti – Off through the Desert” will be performed on Saturday and Sunday at 1:45 p.m. City marketing Cologne particularly highlights the numerous initiatives that take care of cleanliness and quality of life in the city.
Cultural highlights
The weekend is also a celebration of Cologne culture. On Friday, September 19th, the colorful series of theater performances begins with “Hans Gerzlich – I remembered myself younger” at 8:00 p.m. Anyone interested in comedies has the opportunity to enjoy “Five Minutes of Silence” on September 20th and 21st, while the rock concert by Oll Spencer’s Melting Pot beckons on Saturday evening. There is also the opportunity to take part in the open-air exhibition “In the Lens of State Power” on the Rhine promenade, which can be seen until October 19th. Alternatively, you could also watch the film screening “Leibniz – Chronicle of a Lost Image”, which runs on all three days at 5:15 p.m. An extensive culinary offering rounds off the cultural program, with autumnal dishes at the Mainzer Hof, while the Gasthaus Wagenhalle tempts with chanterelle risotto.
Nevertheless, it shows that the city of Cologne not only has fun and culture, but also a strong awareness of sustainability and environmental protection. World Cleanup is a global movement that highlights the challenges of our throwaway society. Here it is emphasized how important it is to actively work for a better environment. Workshops and educational offerings invite everyone to take responsibility and actively contribute to change.
In a city that is committed to the cleanliness and quality of life of its citizens, joint actions such as World Cleanup Day and local events are indispensable. They show that every Cologne resident can contribute to making the city more livable - and have a lot of fun at the same time!
