New center Michaelshoven: Quartierplatz should be bigger and more lively!

A lot is happening in Cologne-Rodenkirchen: The “Neue Mitte Michaelshoven” is taking shape and is intended to create a lively center in the Sürther Feld. The “Rodengrün” project is being implemented in an area of around 2.7 hectares between Sürther Straße, Michaelshoven, Eygelshovener Straße and the Rodenkirchen comprehensive school. Around 300 apartments will be created here, all of which will be rented out, as well as a drugstore, a grocer, a pharmacy and even a small café.

Particular attention is being paid to the neighborhood square, which is to be enlarged by 130 square meters. This will be necessary to meet the needs of future users and residents, reports Cologne City Gazette. In order to realize this expansion, Eygelshovener Straße will also be redesigned and a new roundabout will be created. The citizens have already clearly spoken out in favor of expanding the square, and local politicians have initiated an examination of this idea without provoking delays.

Development planning and public participation

Early public participation, which plays an important role in such complex projects, was completed in November. The results were recently presented by investors and project developers Doetsch and Hellinger as well as city planner Burkard Dewey. The district mayor Manfred Giesen invited people to explain the plans and the current status of things.

With the aim of creating an integrative and functional district, the construction of the new center is planned in two phases, starting on Sürther Straße. The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2029 – assuming everything goes according to plan. The development follows a new development plan, which became necessary due to previous uses.

An eye on the future

The site is currently still partially used by “WiSü” for the Bürgertreff X, which shows that the community is actively integrated into the planning and use of the spatial concept. An interim school for high school students from the new Rondorf high school is also housed on the site. While the city of Cologne actively addresses the challenges of neighborhood development, it places value on cooperation and social cohesion, as explained in the publication about exemplary neighborhood development projects from the German Association of Cities.

So it remains exciting to see how the “Neue Mitte Michaelshoven” will continue to develop. The consent and involvement of local residents could make the difference when it comes to creating a symbol of neighborly life in Cologne. Suggestions for planning can be sent to district mayor Manfred Giesen by November 6th, so keep your eyes and ears open!
