Traffic chaos on Sunday: Cologne cyclists take to the streets!
On Sunday, June 15, 2025, there will be a lot of activity in Cologne, Leverkusen and Hürth: A private person has registered a total of ten meetings under the motto “Cologne Rally 2025 - Cycling connects - Cologne remains colorful”. The Cologne police expect around 1,000 participants to be on the streets from 12 p.m. The bicycle demonstrations are not only a symbol of bicycle-friendliness, but also a call to promote sustainable mobility in the region.
Traffic will be significantly affected. Participants will be gathered at various starting points in Cologne—including the districts of Porz, Sürth, Meschenich, Weiden, Widdersdorf, Chorweiler and Dellbrück. There will also be demonstrators from the pedestrian zone in Leverkusen-Wiesdorf and Otto-Räcke-Platz in Hürth. The goal is to join forces with the well-known “Kidical Mass” at Heumarkt.
Traffic disruptions and recommendations
The Cologne police recommend that all drivers avoid the city center on Sunday. The planned routes, which run along the banks of the Rhine and through the city center, are expected to cause traffic jams and delays. An interim rally and the final meeting are planned for the afternoon, with the final rally taking place at Heumarkt around 4:30 p.m.
Considering the increasing number of bicycle demonstrations, it becomes clear how important the topic of active mobility is. As the Mobility Forum states, cycling and walking in Germany is not only healthy and environmentally friendly, but also contributes to the quality of life in urban areas. The challenges that arise from the simultaneous use of street spaces for cyclists and pedestrians are becoming more and more present.
Sharing of street spaces
In order to understand and avoid conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians, various projects call for structural separation of the types of traffic. The goal is to reduce contact points and increase the safety of all road users. These strategies are part of the National Cycling Plan, which plans new research and funding initiatives over the next few years to strengthen the harmonious coexistence of cycling and walking.
The upcoming bicycle demonstrations are therefore not just a local event. They symbolize a shift towards more sustainable transport solutions that meet the needs of everyone and strengthen the voice of those who are committed to a greener future. We can't wait to see what impulses these types of events will provide in the Cologne mobility scene!
