On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, there was a dramatic fire in the basement of a high-rise building in the Cologne-Porz district. A resident noticed smoke coming from the basement around 3:26 p.m. and alerted the fire department. Two fire engines from the professional fire brigade and a unit from the volunteer fire department promptly arrived to prevent anything worse from happening. The basement room, which was around 30 square meters in size, was fully engulfed in flames and the thick smoke reached into the foyer of the building. Fortunately, the number of injuries was manageable: one man was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, while all other residents escaped unscathed.

Around 75 emergency services with 21 vehicles were on site and had to deal with difficult conditions. The exhaust air was poor and heat and smoke built up in the rooms. However, thanks to the quick and organized operation, the fire was brought under control after around 40 minutes. The fire department then carried out a thorough follow-up inspection of the basement corridors, hallways and apartments. The stairwell remained smoke-free so that residents could return safely to their floors. The cause of the fire was investigated by the police.
