Cellar fire in Cologne-Porz: Fire brigade saves residents from the risk of smoke!

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the Cologne-Porz district was rocked by a basement fire. At 3:26 p.m. an emergency call reached the fire department control center, whereupon two fire engines from the professional fire department and a fire department from the volunteer fire department immediately went to Glashüttenstrasse. On site, the fire brigade discovered that an approximately 30 square meter basement room was on fire, which required a quick and effective response. Thanks to the quick intervention of the emergency services, the fire was brought under control after around 40 minutes. ksta.de reports that a man was taken to hospital with smoke poisoning, luckily there were no other injuries.

The fire department was faced with a demanding task: the conditions in the basement were challenging due to difficult exhaust air situations. Despite these difficulties, operations management was able to ensure that stairwells and upper floors remained smoke-free. The residents of the high-rise building were able to return to their apartments as soon as the fire was extinguished. Around 75 fire and rescue services were deployed with a total of 21 vehicles to fight the fire and ensure the safety of residents.

Previous fire incidents

This incident is not the first fire on Glashüttenstrasse. On December 17th last year there was another basement fire in which residents were unable to escape due to smoke in the stairwell. The fire brigade was alerted and the operational code was increased to “Fire 2 with lives in danger” due to the emergency. A total of three people, including a child and two adults, had to be rescued. This operation also demonstrated the importance of efficient firefighting and the need for breathing apparatus to free people from smoke-filled rooms. 24rhein.de reports that the residents of the neighboring house were also examined for harmful fire smoke.

The Cologne police were responsible for determining the cause of the fire, and they began their investigation immediately after the incident. Statistics from FeuerTrutz show that basement fires are a recurring problem and are often caused by carelessness or technical defects. These events raise awareness of the need for effective fire protection, especially in residential buildings where large numbers of people live.

The incidents in Cologne-Porz remind us how important it is to prepare for such emergency situations. The fire brigade, which is on duty day and night, played a crucial role in both cases in preventing anything worse from happening. This shows how important it is for everyone to think about fire protection in their own four walls.
