Attempted robbery in Elsdorf: 13-year-old knocks down 66-year-old!

On the evening of June 25th, an attempted robbery occurred in Elsdorf, Rhein-Erft district, which attracted the attention of the police. According to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, the investigators are now calling on witnesses to come forward with information. The crime occurred around 8:00 p.m. in the Stadionweg area, where a 66-year-old woman was the victim of an attack.

A 13 to 14 year old girl, around 165 cm tall and with long blonde hair, demanded the woman's handbag. When the elderly woman did not respond, she was pushed and eventually beaten. Fortunately, the woman was able to defend herself, allowing the young perpetrator to escape. The police have already set up a criminal investigation team to clarify the case and documented the evidence at the crime scene. Information can be given on 02271 81-0 or by email to poststelle.rhein-erft-kreis@polizei.nrw.de.

Background on juvenile crime

The incident highlights the current situation of juvenile crime in Germany. In 2024, an increase to around 13,800 cases was recorded, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. This is shown by a study by Statista. It is striking that around three quarters of the young suspects are male, with the proportion of men under 21 being as high as 84 percent.

The debate about the criminal responsibility of children under 14, especially for serious crimes such as robbery, is becoming increasingly loud in public. Psychological stress caused by the corona pandemic and specific risks for those seeking protection are cited as possible explanations for the increase in violent crimes among young people.

Compared to previous raids

The police also recently investigated a robbery in December 2024 at a clothing store in Elsdorf, in which a hooded male perpetrator threatened an employee with a knife. He escaped with a bag full of cash. Such incidents require not only a quick response from security forces, but also a comprehensive prevention strategy to reduce the risk of juvenile crime.

The current developments in Elsdorf make it clear that there is a need for action here. The police and society as a whole are called upon to ensure that young people have a perspective and do not slip into crime. A good knack for prevention could help avoid such incidents in the future.
