Farewell to Peter Dicke: Porz loses a strong club leader!

An era ended at the Porz sports club on Wednesday evening: Peter Dicke, who was largely responsible for the club's fortunes as chairman for over a decade and a half, will not stand for re-election. Dicke, who served as youth leader and youth manager for many years, plans to take over the game supervision together with his wife until the end of the season in order to gain more time for the family. The 62-year-old already has two grown children and is expecting his first grandchild soon.

“The time is right for me to say goodbye,” said Dicke, who is a permanent member of the Central Office for Schools Abroad. Since promotion to the Middle Rhine League in 2023, SpVg Porz has stabilized and now has around 300 members and numerous youth teams. Under Dicke's direction, the jump from the district league to the state league to the Middle Rhine League was achieved, which makes the club a sought-after destination for football enthusiasts in the Cologne area.

A look at the sporting challenges

SpVg Porz's sporting performance is mixed. After a disappointing start to the season, in which the team lost 2:3 against Bergisch Gladbach and 0:1 against Frechen 20, the team is once again without points. In many games, the players were committed, but were unable to convert the chances into something countable, which Dicke finds frustrating. An unfortunate handball resulted in a penalty against Frechen, which sealed the 1-0 win.

When asked what will happen next for the SpVg before the upcoming game against FC Pesch on November 2nd, the mood remains optimistic. Despite the setbacks, there is a strong solidarity in the team, which will continue to pursue the goal of getting the first points of the season in the coming game.

The influence of sports clubs in Germany

The importance of sports clubs in Germany should not be underestimated. According to Statista, there were around 85,900 sports clubs in 2024, although their number is trending downward. North Rhine-Westphalia represents the largest share at around 20 percent and has over 17,500 clubs that offer a wide range of opportunities for sporting activities and provide access to sports facilities and sports equipment. These clubs are often organized by sport and offer a platform for many people to do sports and make social contacts.

Even though general interest in sport is high in Germany, there has been a slight decline in recent years. However, SpVg Porz, under the leadership of Dicke, would like to continue to work on making the club attractive and promoting both youth and adult football.

Peter Dicke leaves a lasting impression and a sporting legacy as SpVg Porz tries to gain a foothold in the Middle Rhine League. His most emotional moment remains the 2019 promotion win against Westhoven - a highlight that the club's supporters will never forget.

The last few games have shown that the team has to work hard to improve its performance. Those responsible and fans are excited about the challenges ahead and about a time after Dicke in which the club continues to focus on sporting success and community.
