Safely mobile in old age: Cologne Police invites seniors to a workshop!

In Cologne, seniors are offered a valuable opportunity to be safer on the roads. The Cologne Police will host a workshop entitled “Best Ager” on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This workshop is specifically for people aged 65 and over who want to improve their skills in dealing with traffic conditions.

The event will take place in the digital advice center of the NRW Police in Cologne and will be led by Dr. Kim, a lecturer at the German Sport University Cologne. Participants can look forward to an interactive practical part. This includes tests of perception and reaction speed in order to train the reaction to braking maneuvers and distractions caused by sensory impressions.

Road safety for older people

The need for such workshops is supported by startling statistics. According to that Federal Ministry of Transport In 2023, around 59.3% of pedestrians and cyclists who were fatally injured were at least 65 years old. Older people are among the most unprotected road users and are particularly at risk. It is therefore important to inform them about possible dangers and give them strategies to be safer on the road.

Another aspect of the workshop will be the discussion of current traffic rules as well as new developments and everyday situations. Traffic safety advisors from the Cologne Police Department will be there to help participants answer their questions and give practical tips.

Stay safely mobile together

The offer is aimed at people who want to feel safe on the road. Relatives are welcome to register anyone interested. Registration is possible either by phone on 0221 229-6060 or by email to Sicher.mobil.koeln@polizei.nrw.de.

This initiative is in line with the goal of supporting older people to stay mobile longer and more safely. The Institute for Movement and Sports Gerontology has also dealt intensively with the topic and conducted its own workshops on pedestrian safety in road traffic and prevention strategies in old age. It became clear that older people rarely have accidents in traffic accidents, but are disproportionately involved in serious accidents.

Participation in these workshops is free of charge and offers a solid platform to expand both knowledge and practical skills. Take the chance to be part of this important initiative and improve your road skills!
