Nippes green corridor: million-dollar project for a green future starts!

Something is happening in Nippes: the construction of the “Nippes green corridor” is taking concrete shape. The district council and the council committees have approved the construction project, and the construction decision for the first two phases is in the clear. According to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, construction work is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and should be completed by the end of 2028.

The planned green belt stretches over a length of 1.6 kilometers and covers an impressive ten hectares. It runs along the Line 13 elevated railway between Merheimer and Amsterdamer Straße. The first two sections, “Nature and meadow – at the Nippeser Tälchen” and “Nature finds city – at the town hall”, promise a true oasis of relaxation. There will not only be play terraces and a water playground, but also extensive unsealing of the area, which will bring nature back into everyday life. Particularly noteworthy: By eliminating all parking spaces, the green areas are to be improved.

Sustainable development and climate protection

A very important aspect of the project is the funding from the federal government, which comes with around six million euros from the “Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change” program. According to the City of Cologne, this was decided to support climate-friendly urban development. The measures include, among other things, unsealing areas and strengthening biodiversity.

The city of Cologne has been working on planning a continuous park landscape between Merheimer and Amsterdamer Straße since 2018. A clear focus was placed on proactively dealing with the effects of climate change, as an overview of the Federal Program shows. The goal: high effectiveness for climate protection as well as sustainable adaptation through innovative, green projects.

Concerns and suggestions

As with many large projects, there are different opinions here. The CDU parliamentary group expressed concerns about the table tennis tables on Neusser Strasse and the equipment in the forecourt. The SPD parliamentary group leader expressed his displeasure at the loss of over 200 parking spaces at the district town hall. In contrast, the Greens and Gut & Klimafreunde are enthusiastic about the project and excited about the upcoming changes in northern Nippes.

Another aspect that is often in focus is the needs of local residents. During several planning and ideas workshops between 2021 and 2022, many citizens were able to express their ideas and concerns and thus be an active part of the change process.

Overall, the “Nippes green corridor” seems to be a promising project that can not only increase the quality of life in the district, but also make an important contribution to ecological and climatic improvement. If everything goes according to plan, the people of Cologne will be able to enjoy the benefits of this green lung in just a few years.
