Mülheim Bridge: Light rail services are running again – what’s changing now!

The Mülheim Bridge in Cologne has been brought back to life! On September 15, 2025, light rail lines 13 and 18 were reopened to traffic after a long closure of 17 months. How WDR reports, passengers are happy that the construction-related separation of the lines has finally come to an end.

Line 13 has even been extended to the Thielenbruch stop, while line 18 now ends at the Buchheim Herler Straße station. However, these changes are temporary because, according to KVB, there is currently a lack of vehicles, which made it necessary to change lines in the eastern section of the route. The light rail company promises that once the bridge is fully reopened, the timetable can be increased again in the future.

Swap cars and adjust timetables

The changes bring with them some welcome adjustments. All journeys on line 3 travel to the final stop at Thielenbruch, instead of ending at the Holweide/Vischeringstraße stop as before. During the separation phase, passengers were able to rely on an increased range of services, which significantly improved public connections in the region.

Particularly pleasing for commuters: Line 13 will run every 5 minutes between Thielenbruch and Buchheim Herler Straße. On Mondays to Fridays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., passengers can look forward to a pleasant frequency, while on Saturdays a 20-minute service is maintained due to limited capacities. Line 18, on the other hand, will be increased during peak hours, with six additional trips between 6:50 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. from Holweide Vischeringstrasse towards Klettenberg.

Reinforcements and other changes

The provisional line 14 and the replacement bus line 118 will no longer be available when the Mülheim Bridge is put back into operation. This change simplifies timetables and offers passengers more direct connections to important hubs such as Mülheim train station or Wiener Platz.

Apart from the changes to the Mülheim Bridge, a lot has happened on the other lines of the KVB operation. The 5-minute interval in the afternoon will be reintroduced on line 1 and the Lindenburg stop (University Hospital) will now be called University Hospital Cologne. The frequency between Niehl Nord and Merkenich on line 12 will also be increased again.

Overall, Cologne's light rail service will be a little more colorful and flexible from September 15th. The KVB informs that the next major timetable update will take place at the start of the school year, although no additional changes are currently planned for December.

To find out more about the details, we recommend reading local reports, such as those from ksta.de, to keep an eye on. The new timetable could please many commuters and city residents!
