Cat action on the S-Bahn: man surprises passengers in North Rhine-Westphalia!

In an extraordinary incident on the Cologne S-Bahn on May 27, 2025, two women reported to the police when a man on the train tried to give away cats. The man, equipped with a cardboard box, offered a mother cat and her four kittens to the surprised passengers. The WAZ reports that the man explained that he had to get rid of the animals quickly because his new partner was allergic. The situation alerted the authorities and the public order office was informed to clarify the matter.

Immediately after the police arrived, the man was found with the box. The cats were brought into a safe environment and housed in the Cologne-Dellbrück animal shelter. The family is now in a new room there, where they are now waiting for a species-appropriate home. According to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, within two hours of the incident there were already 45 comments on a Facebook post from the animal shelter, with reactions ranging from relief at the survival of the cats to calls for action against the man.

Division of opinions

This incident also gives the Cologne-Dellbrück animal shelter the opportunity to point out how important it is to hand over animals responsibly. Those interested can search for cats that need a new home on platforms such as Katzenherzen. The adoption is carried out by certified animal welfare associations and the formalities are important to ensure that every cat is placed in a suitable environment. An adoption questionnaire is also used to check the suitability of the potential new owners.

The incident on the S-Bahn may seem like a strange anecdote at first, but it raises important questions about the treatment of animals and their species-appropriate husbandry. It remains to be hoped that the cats in the animal shelter will soon find a loving home.
