In an extraordinary incident on the Cologne S-Bahn on May 27, 2025, two women reported to the police when a man on the train tried to give away cats. The man, equipped with a cardboard box, offered a mother cat and her four kittens to the surprised passengers. Immediately after the police arrived, the man was found with the box. The cats were brought into a safe environment and housed in the Cologne-Dellbrück animal shelter. The family is now in a new room there, where they are now waiting for a species-appropriate home. According to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, within two hours of the incident there were already 45 comments on a Facebook post from the animal shelter, with reactions ranging from relief at the survival of the cats to calls for action against the man.
