Festive castle festival: 1000 years of Haus Herl in Cologne-Buchheim!

A very special event is being celebrated in the Buchheim district this year: the 1,000-year-old history of House Herl, also known as Herler Castle, will be duly celebrated with a big festival on Sunday, August 31st. This beautiful former moated castle, which dates back to the 16th century and is well preserved, is picturesquely located on the Strunde in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine and is not only a historical monument, but also an important landmark of the region.

The oldest surviving document that mentions the House of Herl dates back to 1025, and Buchheim can therefore look back on a long and important history. To celebrate the anniversary, IG Burgfest, consisting of 17 different groups and clubs in the area, has planned numerous activities to bring both residents and visitors together. “It is important to encourage people to come together,” says Sophie Hirschberg, chairwoman of the Buchheim Citizens and Local History Association (BHV Buchheim), summing up the motives for the festival.

A celebration for the community

The castle festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the castle courtyard and on the grounds at Buchheimer Ring 2. Here all guests, young and old, can look forward to a varied program. From coffee and cake to beer and hearty food to children's games and laser shooting, there is something for everyone. Anyone who would like to learn something about the history of the house has the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the riding stable or be entertained by a children's choir and a dance group. There are even two performances of a play about the creation of the castle on the program!

In the run-up to the festival, we also actively collect money for IG Burgfest. It is a sign of community cohesion, which is intended to be strengthened again during the festival. Around 20 to 25 years ago, castle festivals were held regularly at Haus Herl, but this tradition had fallen asleep. Now it's time to revive the castle festival and promote a sense of community in this lively Veedel.

A piece of culture and history

The historical significance of the Herl House should not be underestimated. The building, which, together with the Herler Mühle, enjoys listed status, stands north of the Merheimer Heide and has become firmly anchored in the region over the centuries. With the Website burgen.de Those interested can not only be informed about the anniversary celebration, but also about many other exciting events throughout Germany that revolve around castles and palaces.

Preparations for this special anniversary began in November, and with the publication of a commemorative publication by the Buchheim History Workshop, the long history of the Herl House will also be acknowledged in writing. On the day of the festival itself, visitors are not only treated to culinary delicacies, but also to information about the historic castle, which invites you to celebrate and be amazed.

Be there when the castle festival comes to life on August 31st and get to know the fascinating history of the Herl House. We celebrate together, talk shop and honor the region's cultural heritage!
