Power outages in Cologne: Technicians fight against the darkness!

Today, June 11, 2025, a technical malfunction in Cologne's power grid is causing some inconvenience. The districts of Lindenthal and Mülheim are particularly affected, where the RheinNetz GmbH works hard to solve problems. Technicians are deployed at two locations to resolve the challenges in the power grid. The last update about the outage was at 8:45 p.m. It is interesting to learn that there have already been 189 power outages in Cologne this year, as an overview shows power outage.org shows.

However, there is a ray of hope for the residents in Mülheim, as the disruption in the Langemaß area was successfully resolved today at 12:50 p.m. In the event of a power outage, the first thing to do is inspect the fuse box. If overload is suspected, it is recommended to reactivate the fuse. If problems persist, there may be a deeper plumbing problem that should be checked by a professional.

Information for affected residents

Affected neighbors should inform each other and contact the energy supplier, as calling emergency services is not the right way to do this. It is not the first time for the people of Cologne that they have been confronted with power outages. Compared to 2023 with a total of 388 reported failures, the situation has improved in 2025. Nevertheless, there are examples from the last few months: 61 outages were recorded in March, followed by 54 in May.

The current problems are embedded in the ongoing work on the power grid. From the beginning of June until November 2025, RheinNetz GmbH will be modernizing the main supply ring in the south of Cologne, which may have additional effects on the power grid. In this context, from June 2nd, a one-way street will be set up on Steinstrasse between the Urbacher Weg roundabout and the Theodor-Heuß-Strasse intersection in order to coordinate work between the construction sites. However, pedestrians and cyclists still have access in both directions.

The energy supply in Cologne has often been in the headlines recently, but there are also positive developments. A new water transport pipeline was recently announced in Rodenkirchen, which is intended to replace the old and dilapidated pipeline. These new pipes, delivered on May 19, are not only critical to infrastructure, but are also delivered in an environmentally friendly manner using a low-carbon biofuel.

The city of Cologne and RheinNetz GmbH are striving to keep the inconvenience for citizens as low as possible. Those responsible are learning from the experience of recent years and are always looking for ways to make supply more reliable and to modernize the infrastructure.
