Cologne Marathon 2025: Over 37,000 runners and new participant records!
The Cologne Marathon on October 5, 2025 promises to be a highlight in the city's sporting calendar. With over 37,000 participants, more than ever before, the event will see a record number of participants. Compared to the previous year, the number of registrations rose by more than 21 percent - a real sign of the growing enthusiasm for running in the cathedral city.
The route takes runners both picturesquely and challengingly from Deutz via Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld and Nippes to the iconic Cologne Cathedral. This will not only be a test for the athletes, but also a celebration for spectators along the route. Over 30 hotspots will create a rousing atmosphere, including the American Football Club Detroit Lions, who will be cheering on the athletes with a DJ and competitions on the 16th kilometer.
Top athletes and record hunting
The more than 10,000 athletes registered for the entire marathon distance include not only amateur athletes, but also the crème de la crème of the international running scene. A total of 15 top African runners will take part, including the Kenyans Risper Chebet and Faith Chepkoech as well as Jonathan Maiyo and Douglas Chebii. Among the German participants, the focus is on Jonathan Dahlke, who is aiming for a time of under 2:14 hours. The organizers have set themselves ambitious goals: a winning time of under 2:10 hours for the men and under 2:30 hours for the women, which could break the existing record in Cologne.
In the half marathon, the reigning German champion Esther Pfeiffer could even challenge the course record of 1:09:15 hours from 2008. Among the men, Jona Bodirsky and Mamiyo Nuguse Hirusato are also the favorites to break the record of 1:03:00 hours.
Social responsibility and commitment
The Cologne Marathon is also characterized by social responsibility. Funds are to be collected for The Human Safety Net initiative via a donation mat on Aachener Straße. Supported by the REWE Group, which mobilizes more than 600 employees for HistiozytoseHilfe e.V., the aim is to collect around 60,000 euros for social projects. With initiatives such as “R(h)ein Inclusive” and “Limitless in Motion”, the marathon shows that commitment goes beyond the competition.
The average age of the participants is 34.7 years for women and 36.4 years for men, with the proportion of women in the field constantly growing. This is also reflected in new running communities such as Milers Colonia and Run Squad Cologne, which contribute to the increasing popularity of the event.
For everyone who cannot be there, there is a live stream of the race on the Generali Cologne Marathon YouTube channel. This means no one is left out as the athletes fight their way to the finish on their way to the impressive distance of 42.195 km.
The Cologne Marathon is more than just a sporting event; it is a festival that brings people together and an important part of the running culture in Germany. Loud Statista Running is becoming increasingly popular in Germany - a trend that is also impressively evident in Cologne.
