But how are the legal basis for these Sunday openings regulated in the country? The City of Cologne explains that since the Shop Closing Act was repealed in November 2006, there are no longer any uniform federal regulations. So every community has its own way of dealing with it. The last adjustment to the North Rhine-Westphalian shop opening law took place in 2018, which led to greater flexibility in determining Sunday shopping hours. Sellers are now allowed to open their doors on Sundays even without specific occasions, as long as the need allows.

A look beyond the borders

Let's take a look at the regulations in other countries: InAustriaThere is a general ban on opening shops on Sundays, with numerous exceptions. InPolandHowever, shops are open on almost every Sunday; trading is only closed on 12 public holidays. Sunday shopping in Cologne is not only an occasion for shopping, but also a celebration for the community. Especially the meteorological outlook for July 6th, with temperatures around22°Cand occasional rain, couldn't stop visitors from strolling through the streets and enjoying the diverse offerings of Cologne's retailers.
