Ten days of traffic jams: A4 closure near Cologne causes extensive diversions!
From Friday, September 12th, traffic in the Cologne area will be put to a real test of patience. The A4 will be completely closed for ten days between Cologne-West and the Eifeltor junction in the direction of Olpe. This measure is necessary in order to carry out urgently required renovation and repair work on the severely damaged roadway. The closure begins at 10 p.m. and ends on Monday, September 22nd at 5 a.m., as 24rhein reports.
The reason behind this traffic turnaround is not just cosmetic work: the renovation is a prerequisite for optimizing traffic routing in the direction of Olpe. And that is what is needed – serious defects were recently discovered in the “Eifeltor” DB crossing structure, which has already led to a new traffic route. In June 2025, traffic routing between Cologne South and the Cologne-Eifeltor/Klettenberg junctions was optimized. The current work is intended not only to improve the existing condition, but also to counteract further damage and minimize future closures.
Important diversions
The full closure also has an impact on traffic connections in the Cologne-West motorway junction. Exiting from the A1 from Dortmund or Koblenz onto the A4 in the direction of Olpe is not possible during the closure. Driving from the A4 from Aachen onto the A4 to Olpe is also prohibited. At the Cologne-Klettenberg junction you can drive in the direction of Aachen, but not in the direction of Olpe. Significant detours must be expected here.
For long-distance traffic, diversions via the A1 towards Dortmund and the A3 towards Frankfurt are recommended. Local diversions for the closed Cologne-Klettenberg junction have also been set: road users from Cologne will be redirected via the Military Ring Road to the Cologne-Eifeltor junction, while drivers from Hürth will be redirected via the L92 and the “Am Eifeltor” road to the Cologne-Eifeltor junction. These diversions are announced by dynamic signposts in a larger area, as rheinische-anzeigenblaetter makes clear.
It is advisable to adapt to the changed traffic situation in good time and, if necessary, plan alternative routes. Because it looks like drivers and commuters in Cologne are facing some diversions, while the roads in the Cologne area should soon ensure smoother traffic again.
