Break-ins and mysterious tire thefts: Citizens warn in Lindenthal
A break-in in August left a clear mark on the lives of Patrick B. and his girlfriend. Despite a secured apartment door and a modern smart home system, the two were victims of a surprising attack. The investigation was closed due to a lack of evidence, although the perpetrators were photographed. Express reports that Patrick has been particularly vigilant about his Lindenthal district since then.
The 37-year-old from Cologne reported a strange incident on Friedrich-Schmidt-Straße: A BMW was standing on wooden posts after all of its wheels were stolen. A similar incident also occurred on the night of September 13th on Max-Wallraf-Straße in Cologne-Braunsfeld, where a car was wound up on wooden poles while the tires and rims were stolen. The Melaten belt in Ehrenfeld was also not spared, where a vehicle suffered a similar fate on September 2nd, while a theft was also reported in the Ossendorf district, Bertha-Sander-Straße, between September 2nd and 15th.
The latest series of thefts
The Cologne police have so far no indication that an organized gang of thieves is behind these incidents. Christoph Bermel, a police spokesman, explains that although there are fluctuations in the frequency of cases, no evidence of a group of perpetrators could be found. “Stolen tires and rims are often difficult to trace because they are often sold online,” explains Bermel.
The increasing concern about vehicle thefts is backed up by a recent arrest. T online reports that Cologne police arrested three men over the weekend who are suspected of being involved in a vehicle theft. A 44-year-old man was taken into custody after plainclothes police spotted him taking an interest in parked motorcycles. During a check, officers discovered a stolen scooter in the back of a van.
A look at the numbers
As the Police NRW shows in their current crime statistics, the security situation in Cologne remains an important issue. The numbers surrounding thefts, especially of vehicles and vehicle parts, show a threat to Cologne citizens that cannot be ignored.
Patrick B.'s experiences and recent developments make it clear that concerns about break-ins and thefts in Cologne remain high. The victims are frustrated about the discontinuation of the investigation into their own case. Many Cologne residents like Patrick are calling for more support and effective measures from the authorities to better combat crime.
