Israel's army stops activist ship: Thunberg and aid supplies in danger!
The situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense and tragic. On June 9, 2025, an activist ship carrying relief supplies was stopped by Israeli authorities. The NGO activist Greta Thunberg and eleven other comrades set out from Sicily on June 1st to transport urgently needed goods such as baby and medical food to Gaza. But the ship, named Madleen, was quickly brought to Israeli shores. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the cargo was too small to be considered an aid shipment and the activists merely wanted to stage a media provocation, reports Radio Köln.
Israel has made it clear that the naval blockade of Gaza cannot be broken. Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the ship's arrival to be prevented. Thunberg, who is not only known for her climate protection activities but also fights for the Palestinian cause, wanted to use her action to draw attention to the humanitarian emergency in Gaza, where around two million people live.
Humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is alarming: since October 7, 2023, there have been over 25,000 deaths and 62,000 injuries due to Israeli military interventions. Medical care is severely affected: only three hospitals are currently fully operational, while 20 are completely out of order. Of 77 primary health care centers, only 15 are open. CADUS describes this as a catastrophic situation in which almost the entire population is suffering from hunger and is in urgent need of help.
The WHO estimates that 1.93 million people have had to flee Gaza, about 85% of the population. The possibilities for humanitarian aid are also severely limited: almost all border crossings are closed and the transfer of materials for vital projects is extremely difficult. These restrictions are having a devastating impact on the supply of food, medicine and medical personnel.
The fight for attention
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a network that is actively campaigning for an end to the blockade of Gaza. She is at the center of a movement that seeks to bring into focus the information people receive about the suffering in the region. Free Gaza Australia spokesman James Godfrey highlights the difficulty of obtaining accurate figures on Gaza deaths. It is estimated that the number of deaths since the conflict began in October 2023 could have risen to as many as 186,000, reports 3CR.
To draw attention to the situation, CADUS is planning the first emergency medical aid mission in the Gaza Strip. The challenges are enormous, but the CADUS team is determined to help even under difficult conditions. The medical emergency, in which chronically ill people can no longer be cared for, requires immediate action and international support.
Although the blockade continues, numerous organizations and activists are trying to support those affected. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has ethical, political and social dimensions that cannot be ignored.
