Drug raid in Cologne: Kiosk exposed as a drug trading center!
A kiosk on Severinstrasse in Cologne's southern city came into the focus of drug investigators on November 5th. The police were able to uncover this location as an active drug trafficking center. Thanks to an attentive operational team and targeted observation, two 22-year-old suspects were arrested who were allegedly selling heroin and cocaine to users. The investigators observed how consumers approached a kiosk that was initially locked. After the suspects opened the kiosk, the sale of the illegal products began. The police immediately took action and arrested the men inside the kiosk.
The subsequent search of the kiosk, a garage and a car revealed significant material: around 100 grams of heroin and cocaine as well as almost 3,000 euros in cash were seized. The two arrested men now have to answer for commercial trafficking in large quantities of narcotics and have been brought before a judge. Kölnische Rundschau reports that the action was the result of intensive investigations by the Cologne police, which were significantly supported by Criminal Commissariat 27.
Drug crime on the rise
The charges against the kiosk operators add to the worrying statistics on drug crime in Germany. According to Statista, a total of around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded by the police in 2023. This represents a 2 percent increase compared to the previous year. While cannabis cases make up over 90 percent of these statistics, recorded drug trafficking offenses still number around 55,500, with trafficking in substances such as heroin and cocaine remaining a serious problem.
In the context of the Cologne raid, it is noteworthy that customs is taking increased action against the smuggling of illegal drugs. Despite a slight decline in cannabis, the challenges for investigators are enormous. Public health is also severely affected: In 2023, the number of drug-related deaths rose to around 2,230, often suffering from the long-term consequences of drug use.
The raid in Cologne highlights how crucial the work of the security forces is in combating drug-related crime in our cities. It remains to be hoped that further such operations will help to improve the situation and create safer living conditions.
