Brutal attack in Cologne: Four men take a homeless man to the hospital!

On Friday evening, May 30th, a 39-year-old homeless man was brutally attacked by four young men in Cologne's Old Town South. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. when the victim was chased by his attackers and then suddenly attacked. Despite his desperate attempt to hide behind a street sign at the intersection with Pipinstrasse, the attackers quickly became aware of him and continued the attack even when the victim was already on the ground. The victim sustained serious head and facial injuries, but was later able to leave the hospital, as Bild.de reports.

The incident caught the attention of a 56-year-old witness, who intervened and brought an attacker to the ground. Unfortunately, he also became a victim of violence until his wife came to help. The perpetrators fled in different directions and the Cologne police have not yet identified them. The investigators are now evaluating surveillance videos to find clues to the attackers. They were described as being between 17 and 20 years old. One of the suspects was slim and wore dark clothing, while another wore a white T-shirt and a black quilted vest. The Criminal Investigation Department 11 is still accepting tips.

Increasing violent crime in Cologne

The brutal incident is part of a worrying development in Cologne. Michael Esser, the head of the Cologne criminal police, reported at a press conference about the challenges in dealing with violence and organized crime in the city. Currently, over 60 investigators are entrusted with various cases, but so far there has been no success in solving the crimes. There are currently around 30 investigations against around 25 accused; many of these crimes are apparently the result of conflicts in the gang environment. The investigations are made even more difficult by the withholding of information, as both suspects and victims fear acts of revenge, as WDR reports.

An example of the worrying situation is the 300 kilograms of cannabis that disappeared as part of organized crime. The affected gangs are trying to make up for their losses or claim compensation. Two hostage-takings in the Cologne area that took place in Hürth and Rodenkirchen at the end of June and beginning of July should also be seen in this context.

Violent crime figures

The situation in Cologne is also reflected in the statistical records. Between 2014 and 2024, there was a continued increase in violent crime in the city. These statistics, which were published on April 2, 2025, show that the security situation in Cologne is becoming increasingly tense and unsettling the population. The Statista data provides further insight into this worrying development.

In view of the recent incidents and the ongoing security problems in the cathedral city, the Cologne authorities are called upon to take measures to protect citizens and restore confidence in the city's security.
