FC Köln: VAR anger explodes after controversial defeat against Stuttgart!

An exciting football match between 1. FC Cologne and VfB Stuttgart ended with a narrow defeat for the Cologne team on Sunday afternoon. Despite a committed performance, the Rhinelanders lost 1:2. This game, which was broadcast live by DAZN, was not only about the game, but also the focus of the controversial video assistant (VAR).

Coach Lukas Kwasniok expressed his displeasure with the VAR after the game. “I was not, am not and will never be a friend of the VAR,” he emphasized emphatically while criticizing the numerous discussions surrounding the refereeing decisions. Sports director Thomas Kessler was also critical of the VAR assessment in the game. He asked himself why the situation that made Ermedin Demirovic's 1-1 draw possible was assessed this way. In his opinion, this decision would have been different in another game, for example between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

The decisive moment

In the first half, Cologne goalkeeper Martin Schwäbe provided the key moment when he mishandled the ball against Demirovic and hit him on the foot. Referee Matthias Jöllenbeck initially decided to continue playing, but was asked by the VAR to check the scene. After this review, a penalty was awarded, which Demirovic converted to make it 1-1. Kessler criticized the decision and the fact that the referee had to step out for it.

Although the Cologne team was annoyed by the VAR decisions, VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß was understanding when analyzing the game: “The decision was right.” Demirovic did not forget to emphasize that he is not a player who sinks in contact. These controversies surrounding VAR show once again how emotional and polarizing the technology is in modern football.

Problems with the VAR

This innovation could perhaps help to reduce the unrest and discussions surrounding the VAR. But whether this will actually succeed remains to be seen. In any case, the discussions surrounding the VAR decisions indicate that this technology has not yet reached the level of acceptance that many would like.

After the defeat, the challenge for FC Cologne remains to learn from these experiences and be more successful in the next game against other opponents - and perhaps also against the VAR. After seven games, FC Cologne has a solid record in eighth place in the Bundesliga, even if the controversies surrounding referee decisions will continue to be an issue.
