FC Köln gets going: training camp, test matches and new hope!

New year, new luck – that is the motto for 1. FC Köln in the upcoming pre-season preparation for the 2024/25 season. The Billy Goats are determined to put a grueling summer build-up behind them and learn from past difficulties. After a disappointing last season, which culminated in the dismissal of coach Steffen Baumgart, a new course is now being taken with Gerhard Struber. The general dates for preparation have now been announced and promise a lot of excitement.

The first activities in the new calendar start on June 24th, when the training in the Geißbockheim really starts. Performance diagnostics and medical examinations are at the top of the agenda before the first joint training session takes place on June 24th. There will be a date for the fans to look forward to right after the first training session: an autograph session will be offered.

Test matches and training camps

Things will be particularly exciting with the various test matches planned by the FC. The first friendly match against Oberliga club Bergisch Gladbach will be played in the Belkaw Arena on July 12th. There will also be several other encounters in the run-up to this, with 1. FC Köln facing a strong challenge immediately after training in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria, from July 21st to 28th. Managing director Christian Keller has already stated that the general conditions at the Spa Resort Styria are fantastic.

There are still a few test games scheduled before the first competitive games in the DFB Cup against SSV Jahn Regensburg, which are scheduled to take place between August 15th and 18th. The following points should be mentioned, among others:

  • 29. Juni gegen den VfL Rheingold in Köln-Poll
  • 5. Juli gegen die Sportfreunde Siegen in Siegen
  • 10. Juli gegen Union Nettetal in Nettetal
  • 13. Juli gegen Kickers Offenbach (Ort noch offen)
  • 19. Juli gegen VV St. Truiden in Euskirchen
  • 20. Juli gegen Viktoria Köln in Köln
  • 24. Juli gegen Swansea City in Bad Waltersdorf

The way up

The next Bundesliga season begins the following weekend after the cup games. The schedule will be published at the end of June and the anticipation is palpable. Many fans hope that the squad planning will bring promising changes with the return of loan players like Jonas Urbig and the planned adjustments. In test matches that have already taken place, such as the 6-0 win against Sportfreunde Siegen, the first positive signs have already been observed under coach Struber. Dejan Ljubicic, who shone in the right eight position, and a compact defense were praised.

It is all the more important to compensate well for the departures, especially of Mark Uth and other injuries. Right now, all eyes are once again on the transfer situation, as the squad has to make do without additional external reinforcements for the time being due to the transfer ban.

The entire Cologne football community can be excited to see how the Billy Goats will do in the new season. In any case, 1. FC Köln is ready to roll up its sleeves and fight for the top places again next season.
