Police rescue woman from Aquarius Lake – search for missing swimmer is underway!

In the Vogelsang district of Cologne, police forces were called to a dramatic rescue operation in the early morning of June 12, 2025. Residents alerted police at 3:30 a.m. after hearing cries for help from Lake Aquarius. When they arrived, officers discovered a 24-year-old woman in the water who was in acute danger and suffering from severe hypothermia. They immediately swam to her side to bring her safely to shore, where she received immediate medical attention.

Unfortunately, the rescue operation led to the sobering discovery of another missing person. It is a 22-year-old from Cologne who swam in the lake with the woman. The police and fire department deployed extensive search efforts, including rescue divers, service dogs and a police helicopter. These resources were used to thoroughly search the area around Lake Aquarius, but so far there have been no traces of the man.

No evidence of foul play

Investigators are investigating the incident and checking for evidence of possible alcohol and/or drug consumption by the two swimmers. However, there is currently no evidence of foul play, which calms the situation somewhat for the forces involved in the rescue operation. Officials are asking witnesses to contact the criminal investigation department in order to possibly receive further information about the man's disappearance.

A look beyond the city limits

Unfortunately, similar incidents are becoming more common in various regions. There was also a large-scale search operation on the Main-Danube Canal in Forchheim in November 2023 when a missing person was suspected there. The police, fire department and water rescue service used boats, thermal imaging cameras and even a helicopter to search for the person, who was eventually found unharmed. Such operations show how important rapid alerting and preparatory work by emergency services is in order to save human lives.

In another incident in Spandau, several people suffered injuries prior to our report on June 11, 2025. A 39-year-old man had an argument with a group of three people and was injured with a knife. Here, too, it was clear how quickly violence can result from a harmless argument while the police are intensively investigating aggravated robbery.

The incidents of the last few days illustrate the challenges that police and emergency services face in their operations. Their work is crucial to ensuring the safety of the public and responding quickly to emergencies. Whether in Aquarius Lake or another location – the emergency services are always ready to help.
