Major search operation in Cologne: man in the Rhine remains missing!

In Cologne, the water of the Rhine not only remains the habitat of numerous leisure activities, but also the scene of dramatic operations that illustrate the dangers of the river. As the South German newspaper reported that a search for a missing man in the Rhine was stepped up today. The man was spotted between the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Bastei around 2:30 p.m., which immediately mobilized emergency services. One sailor even jumped from a riverboat into the water with a lifebuoy, but returned unharmed. Despite the enormous efforts of the water police, fire brigade and police, the wanted man has not yet been found. A helicopter was also used to support the search.

This search was reminiscent of a similar incident that had already occurred on May 1, 2025. Two men, 36 and 47 years old, made a bet as to who could swim the Rhine faster. The 36-year-old jumped into the water around 12:30 p.m. and was swept away by the strong current. After hours of searching, the police operation had to be called off and the man remains missing despite all efforts. The 47-year-old who was involved in this life-threatening bet was arrested by the police - there was an outstanding arrest warrant against him for theft. The local authorities warn urgently about the dangers of swimming in the Rhine, especially due to the strong currents.

Drowning accidents in Germany

The incidents in Cologne are part of an alarming development. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) reports a total of 411 fatal accidents in water bodies in Germany in 2023, which means an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. It is the third consecutive year with an increase in drownings, and for the first time since 2019 the number of victims has exceeded 400. DLRG President Ute Vogt expresses the hope that the upcoming warm season will make people more aware of these dangers. In particular, the organization plans to make parents of young children aware of the risks.

In recent days, Cologne has not only had to contend with the challenging circumstances in the river, but also with the challenge of ensuring the safety of the swimming and bathing population. While there is no general ban on swimming in the Rhine, the warnings from the authorities and the DLRG are urgent and should be taken seriously. The danger of drowning has many faces, and alcohol and overconfidence in particular are common causes of tragic incidents.

The events remind us that although water sports and swimming are great fun, they also come with significant risks. Whether it's a relaxing beach trip or a sporting competition - caution is advised, especially in popular places like the Rhine in Cologne.
