Mysterious drama at Lake Aquarius: 22-year-old missing!
In the early morning hours of June 12, 2025, the Cologne police were called to a dramatic operation at Wassermannsee in Cologne-Vogelsang. At around 3:30 a.m., residents heard cries for help from the water and immediately alerted the rescue workers. The first police officers to arrive on scene spotted a 24-year-old woman in the lake and immediately swam to her to safety. The woman was brought to the shore very hypothermic and taken to hospital, where her health could be checked, as rheinische-anzeigenblaetter.de reports.
Unfortunately, a second person must also be involved in this operation: a 22-year-old man, who is believed to be the companion of the rescued woman, has been missing since then. The two were reportedly swimming in the water together when the situation appeared to get out of control. There is currently no clear information about the exact circumstances, but indications of a possible influence of alcohol or drugs on both swimmers became a relevant topic of discussion for the investigators, as news.de notes.
Extensive search operation
In order to make the search for the missing person as possible as possible, major measures were taken. In addition to rescue divers, sniffer dogs, the rescue service and even a police helicopter were used. In conditions that were at best adverse - the Wassermannsee is around 10 meters deep and has a visibility depth of less than half a meter under water - up to 70 emergency services from the professional fire department, volunteer fire department, DLRG and DRK were on site, as t-online.de reports.
The dark waters and high vegetation made diving activities extremely difficult. Residents reported that items of clothing belonging to the missing man and woman were found on the shore, increasing concerns for the 22-year-old. Ultimately, the search efforts ended in the morning of the same day without the missing man being found. This remains untraceable for the time being, and the operation was officially ended at around 11 a.m. The investigations by the criminal police, who are continuing to evaluate witness information, will continue as requested. This development shows once again how quickly and unexpectedly situations in the water can develop.
The Cologne police ask that any witnesses who have further information about the incident contact them on 0221 229-0 or by email at poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de.
