Noise pollution in Bickendorf: Citizens demand clear solutions!

The premiere of the new event series “Counter Talks” recently took place in the courtyard of the Median Therapy Center in the Bickendorf district of Cologne. This initiative, which was organized by the Awo social space coordination Bickendorf and Ossendorf and the Aktion Neighborhood association, aims to connect citizens with local politicians and offer them a platform for their concerns and ideas. To arouse curiosity and strengthen a sense of community, sausages and soft drinks were distributed at the event.

As the Review reported, the first discussions revolved around burning issues such as a lack of housing, the pollution of green spaces and the timetables for KVB lines 3 and 4. The four politicians present from the district council and the city council took time to talk to the citizens and explain their personal values and political responsibilities. “A lack of communication often leads to misunderstandings and conflicts,” emphasized one participant in the discussion.

Noisy neighbors and problem areas

Noise pollution is not just an everyday issue in Bickendorf - it is the biggest stress factor in urban areas throughout Germany. According to a current study by the Federal Environment Agency, 58 percent of citizens feel bothered by the noises of their neighbors, while 67 percent complain about disruptions caused by road traffic. This shows how important dialogue between neighbors and the community is.

Next steps and outlook

The next “counter discussions” will take place on June 26th from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Neighborhood Campaign at Ossendorfer Weg 5. There, other interested parties have the opportunity to contribute their ideas and suggestions. Institutions wishing to take part in the event can contact Frédéric Bravo Paredes. Such opportunities, which promote getting to know neighbors, are important for strengthening social cohesion - not only in Bickendorf, but also in other parts of the city.

In view of the sometimes tense neighborhood conditions, social scientist Sebastian Kurtenbach reminds us that problems do not always have to separate people. Housing challenges can also form an active community and promote exchange, as can be seen in many cities. “It’s up to us how we treat each other,” he summarizes, adding that increasing linguistic diversity can sometimes make communication difficult, especially in cities like Berlin and Cologne.

The challenges are diverse, but with a little commitment a lot can be achieved in Veedel. Citizens are now called upon to raise their voices!
